Vintage Route 66 Kachina Dolls...Kwahu, Hotsani by Emil Pooley and Flute Kachina by Abbot Sackiestewa - all circa 1950

Three Vintage Hopi Route 66 Kachina Dolls circa 1950... on the left is Kwahu, in the middle is Hotsani, and a Flute Kachina on the right. Hotsani was carved by Emil Pooley and the Flute Kachina might have been carved by Abbot Sackiestewa. The style and painting is consistent with other examples of his work. The prices are $45, $60 and $60 respectively.

Well, I haven't added any new posts lately, so I figured it was about time to add one. I plan on adding new posts a couple times a week. I know there are relatively new collectors who are interested in knowing what literature is out there about collecting. I will review some books on Kachina Dolls and related topics as well as more general info on collecting. Also, I will put up pics. of some of my own artwork...watercolor paintings of old Kachina Dolls.

I just added a photo of a Wakas Kachina Doll circa 1940. I had this doll for a few years and then decided to sell him. I made up my mind that I wanted a painting of him to hang on my wall, so this is the result. Unfortunately, I haven't touched a brush or paints in some time, but I really need to get back to my painting. I have done some experimental painting with instant espresso. I will post some of these as well.

Jimmy Kewanwytewa Dolls

Well, I have been very busy and unfortunately not posted anything in quite some time. I plan to get back to it on a regular basis. Btw...I am receiving a collection of small Jimmie K Dolls that I will be posting on this blog. I hope to take some pics. this weekend ad early next week...so stay tuned!

1940s Snake Dancer by Victor Charlie

This Snake Dancer Kachina is by old-time Hopi Kachina Carver Victor Charlie, who is the the grandfather of famous carver Neil David Sr. Neil was taught by Victor how to carve. Victor Charlie's work is featured in the famous collection of German artist, Horst Antes, and Victor's dolls appear in the catalog. This Snake Dancer measures 11 inches tall and is painted with tempera and mineral paints. The feathers on his head are replaced, the old ones have long since worn away. The right foot has been repaired, though it is scarcely noticeable. SOLD

Background Information on Hopi Route 66 Kachina Dolls

From my own research and years of collecting Hopi Kachina Carvings, it seems that Route 66 Kachina Dolls first came on the scene after WWII when the economy boomed and government funds were available for a major expansion of the nations highways and interstates. During this time of expansion many of these small Kachina Dolls appeared en masse in giftshops and roadside stops where tourists could buy a souvenir of their visit to the southwest, hence the appellation "Route 66 Kachina." As I continually develop this blog, I will update it with more information that I already have in my head and information that I discover along the way. In addition there will be photos of Route 66 Kachina Dolls from my collection that I will offer for sale through this site. Comments and opinions are welcome. I will also set up other blogs with related topics in the near future.
